Corona has an excellent idea following up on Saltwater brewery

Positive news for wildlife and the environment

Before telling you about this great idea, I want to give you some background information on the founder of Corona beer.

Senor Antonio Fernandez

A small Spanish village in the province of Leon has become news, as suddenly its 80 residents have become millionaires. This miracle happened because of Antonio Fernandez, who was born in 1917 in Cerezales del Condado. He died in August 2018 at the ripe age of 99. He never forgot his birth village where he grew up in great poverty, together with his 12 brothers and sisters. Senor Fernandez bequeathed each inhabitant an inheritance of $2.5 million.

When Antonio was 32 years old, he emigrated to Mexico in 1949 together with his wife.

In this unfamiliar country, he became successful and CEO of Grupo Modelo in 1971. This is the company where the world famous Corona beer has been brewed since 1925. Corona Extra is the second most imported bottled beer in the USA. It reaches nearly $700 million sales a year. In old times they served this blend of malted barley hops and corn and yeast simple with no garnish.

Nowadays it is normally served with lime. If you love to drink cerveza, you will squeeze the lime into your beer. The question arises: why a slice of lime? The story goes it means the use of lime is to keep the flies from sitting on the mouth of the bottle. The production of Corona beer is huge. The brewery can produce 20 million bottles in 24 hours.

A new and helpful invention

Coming back to what this article is about, some good news for the environment. Corona will test 100% plastic-free-6-pack rings at the beginning of 2019. They posted this very positive news in The Good News Network. I am happy to forward this news, as one does not read positive news so often. Anything which can help the environment and animals is worth mentioning.

They make these new rings from plant-based biodegradable fibers, together with a mix of by-product waste and compostable materials. After being discarded and coming in contact with water, the non-plastic rings serve as food for marine animal life. We have dirtied our planet with plastics, all kinds of plastics in many shapes.

More than a million marine creatures and birds and animals sadly lose their lives to plastic trash. The plastic rings holding beverage containers in 6-packs is one culprit. Sea animals are eating it or becoming trapped by it and are dying at an alarming rate.

Plastic waste on beach

Plastic waste on beach image bilyjan

Big beach cleanup

They recognized the harmful nature of these rings in the 1970s, and people were speaking out about it. Even if it forms only a small part of the total plastic waste, it is good to realize the danger. In 1988 there was a beach cleanup, organized in Oregon. Within a few hours, a group of volunteers had collected 1,500 six-pack rings.

Photodegradable is not harmless

In 1994 The EPA forced all manufacturers of these rings to make them photodegradable, that means they break down in the light. It then takes various months for that to happen. In the meantime, those smaller pieces still pose a danger as they float in the water.

Animals are suffering from plastic pollution

Birds get their necks stuck in plastic rings and bags, whales consume large amounts with each massive intake of what they think is food. Sea lions get strings around their noses. Turtles eat plastic bags because they float like a jellyfish (an important food source to the turtle) they have even found these poor animals to have container rings wrapped around their shell, causing horrible life-threatening deformities. Soon there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish.

In Africa, the cattle are feeding on plastic, and it clogs rivers up with plastic trash. It is high time something is done about this worldwide problem. One should not forget that plastic is made from petroleum. Some 8% of global oil production is used for making plastic.

I am happy to tell you some good news too. Worldwide people are trying to solve these problems. How about organic and biodegradable bags? I bet that the cows do not mind an edible piece of plastic, and at least it is not dangerous to their health.

A beneficial joining of forces

Corona beer partnered with a nonprofit organization, Parley for the Oceans. With combined forces, they did big cleanups on the beaches of 15 different countries. The harvest was 3 million pounds of plastic waste. It will be a good idea when those plastic rings do not exist anymore. Corona is a global brand and consumed in many countries worldwide, so this action gets attention. Another item which is very dangerous for the environment are Ghost Nets, I hope this problem will also be tackled soon.

There are more well-known beer brands like Carlsberg Beer who are seriously looking for green alternatives to this plastic danger their products produce. Hopefully, all companies will feel inspired by this and will follow these good examples.

This video shows you that harmful can be turned into helpful.

Conclusion

It is possible to make a change, and Corona beer is showing the world one way. Many small things together will make a big impact. On a personal level, one can also do things to improve our environment. How about asking your local bar to change the plastic straws for paper ones? These straws also end up in the ocean and harm marine life and birds.

This is the book for all beer lovers

Do you know about the different beers? The list is extensive, going from pilsners to hazy wheat beers, Belgium-style abbey and Trappist ales, barrel-aged brews, and many more. You will read how to start your own beer cellar, and what beer goes with what food. A perfect gift for a beer drinking friend or for your own library.

I was wondering what’s that 6-pack ring looks like so I google, now I know. Apparently is the “plastics” that hold the 6 cans of beers. Is great to know at least a beer company is taking the lead to make sure our planet earth can still be remain sustainable. Is Corona Beer the first beer company that goes into green innovation?

    Good afternoon Florence,

Nice to see you again. Thank you for your comment.

The seagull pictured on the video is having these rings around its head. Saltwater Brewery was first, I think in 2016.

It needs a huge company, like Corona, to make this known worldwide. Then it is possible more companies will follow this good example. We have to take better care of our environment as that is the place where we live.

Nancy

Thank you for the article.

I am so pleased to hear about this. I can’t stand the plastic rings. I cut them up before I throw them away so if any animal gets into my garbage it cannot get wrapped around them.

I also love that they are working on cleaning up the beaches as well.

That was a great nugget about the founder leaving money to his home village.

Great article all around.

    Good evening Nancy,

That is a great idea to cut up those plastic ring before putting it in the waste. I do not drink anything that comes with those rings but I do put all the plastic waste in one bag to recycle.

On a personal level we can do a lot of things and put all together it does make a difference.

I totally support you on this one most of those producing plastic rings dont know how much harm they do to nature but all they think about is production and making a multi-million dollar company, at least they should be able to care for the birds and sea creatures, else we will se more plastics in the water than fishes *LOL*

Just imagine that we really would have more plastic than fish in the oceans, how awful would that be?

I hope more companies will follow the good example of Corona Beer, like that we would rid the world of this plastic invasion. Also, we should all do our bit to help, using no plastic bags for shopping or refusing plastic straws in the bar.

Anna

Hello there!

Unfortunately the world is full of plastic and it is so nice to see that there are always some people who try to protect the environment, in this case, Corona.

Nature is the best thing we have here, on earth, so why are we always so selfish?

Thank you for sharing this with us and I hope your post will motivate people to follow Corona’s example.

Great article!

    Good evening Anna,

It is indeed good to see a big company like Corona think about the environment and coming up with a solution to their plastic waste. You are right, Nature is the best we have and we should take care of it.

MONDOS

I have no knowledge about that topic, but I was interested at the beginning and got lost some where in the middle of the article. I like your historical accounts, it makes your article stood out. It is true that human activity causes so much harm to our surrounding living things and with new invention considering the safety of the environment should be innovative ideas to put to actions. What was the main Idea that you want to get across to the readers? Thanks. Paul.

    Good evening Paul,

Thank you for leaving a comment on my website. I hope you downloaded your free PDF?

Sorry to hear you got lost halfway reading my article. Good you found the end, so we can talk about why I wrote this post.

Too often one hears about disasters, mostly man-made ones. Our environment is under attack and that makes me sad. We have a beautiful planet where hopefully future generations will also be able to live.

To come across some positive news, like Corona skipping their plastic rings which harm animals for biodegradable ones, I think is worth a mention. So there you have the reason I wrote this post.

Aloha Taetske!

Your article addresses a huge and very important point. I know such trash pictures very well.
In 2012 I visited Mallorca for the second time and saw some of the most beautiful beaches like the Playa Es Trenc, and bays in the world. Especially one little, awesome bay of that I forgot the name, you could access only by a boat, let me cry.
In comparison to those pictures, Hawaii is pretty clean. But you can find a lot of plastic close to the water where fishing men leave their fishing lines there and of course other for birds and animals dangerous trash.

The Corona Beer cleaning activity is wonderful! When I still lived in Germany – I lived at the Werder Lake, one of the most beautiful parts of Bremen, very central about 5 minutes on foot to the city center – I cleaned up the shores of the lake. I lived there for about 12 years and one year the trash started to be visible all around the lake. I cleaned about two kilometers of the path on both sides. My cleaning lasted pretty long. I noticed people hesitate to toss their trash into the bushes when all is nice and clean.

I’m very excited about the new plastic solution! I know, we humans are already consuming plastic in our fish meals.

Thank you so much for caring for our planet and spreading the word!

Keep up your beautiful and important work!
Sending Love and Light your way!
Aloha, Jenna

    Good evening Jenna,

Nice to see you again. Thank you for your comment.

It is so sad that we pollute our environment which after all is our habitat. It is like a Global messy.

That was really admirable that you did this cleanup action. I think you are right when something is clean people do not easily dare to dirty. When the place is dirty already many will think, oh, my little bit will not make a difference anymore.

I also thought that a positive idea of Coronas Beer, I hope a lot of companies will follow this good example.

I am blessed to live in an extremely well kept and clean village in the south of Spain. Over the years it has improved so much. Recycle bins for each thing. Only once a week we bring a bag with household trash which cannot be sorted. Plastic, paper, cardboard, and glass have been sorted out before. The organic waste is dug into the vegetable garden.

I hope you will visit again.

Shubhangi

Hey Taetske,

There is no doubt that humans are making incredible harm to nature and unfortunately, plastic is doing the worst part in damaging our nature and mother earth.

As we all know that plastic cannot be regenerated like other things and continue to damage the earth and soil, even if you turn it into pieces.

Sadly, having wings does not help birds escape the threat of plastic. Dead chicks with stomachs full of plastic, entangled and smothered by plastic rings and nets are all too real consequences of the toll that plastic takes on birds and other wildlife.

The precautionary steps taken by Corona is definitely admirable and we need more companies who take initiative to cut down the use of plastic.

A great read anyway:)

I was really happy when I discovered this news about the six-pack rings of Corona beer. It is a drop in the ocean but when all companies who use those rings follow it gives a good example to the world.

The harm we do to our environment which is our habitat is unbelievable. I started with 2 websites in January 2017 and when you start to investigate you come across amazing things. Sadly these things are too often negative. So I decided I wanted to write about what is happening in our world. We definitely should take better care o Mother Earth.

    Good Morning Sam,

Our world is literally drowning in plastic, all countries suffer an overload and our rivers, lakes, and oceans are also full of plastic. Latest by 2050 it is said that there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans. That is our fault.

It is high time that we realize our stupid actions carry serious consequences for fauna, flora, and the human race.

It is exciting to see a multinational company taking responsibility for the environment. I hope other companies will take a hint and follow suit. My husband drinks Corona, but he always buys the box or a single large can.
I do not buy cans with that plastic holder. If I buy soda or beer it is either boxed or in a bottle. If I can’t find some way to reuse it, I recycle it.
If the packaging of a product I am considering buying is not partially recycled and/or recyclable I don’t buy it.
I have only seen beaches in Florida near established hotels and such. I presume they pay someone to keep it tidy, as I saw no trach while I was there.
It is upon each of us to make our dollars count. If we stop putting money into environmentally irresponsible company’s pockets, they will notice. Unfortunately, this is the only way to reach many of them.
Thank you for this informative and uplifting post.

    Good Morning Gwendolyn,

Nice to meet somebody who cares about the environment. I live on an organic farm in the south of Spain. In 1981 I had my own awful experience with Monsanto’s product Roundup. That opened my eyes and I became organic.

On the part of the beaches which belong to hotels and where the money is being made with the rental of sunbeds, etc you will not see much waste. It is on those beaches where there is not a daily cleanup that one can find accumulated waste including plastics of all shapes and colors.

There are so many things wrong in this world and it is mainly our fault that it is very nice to come across some positive news.

I remember back in the 70s when animals were getting these plastic rings wrapped around themselves and dying.  Or they were eating the plastic and dying. The fact that Corona is doing something to make a difference warms my heart. I think that the invention of edible plastics is genious!  Cheers to Corona…I’m definitely switching to that beer from now on.

    Good Morning Cynthia,

This  initiative of Corona, of getting rid of those harmful plastic rings, made me want to write about it. I am not a beer fan. I prefer red wine, but this was too good a story to not mention it. I hope people become more conscious of the damage all this plastic does to our environment.

Thank you for your comment. I hope you downloaded a free PDF of your choice? Tulip widget.
