Fasting cure and its Benefits for your Health

Why you need an internal cleaning now and then

One has to detoxify now and then with a fasting cure as we are full of additives, toxins, and more of these niceties. Our food has gotten worse over the years. The so-called authorities have informed us these last 50 years or so about what is good or bad for us.

The problem is that the list of the condemned foods or praised foods has varied wildly over the years. First one should not eat eggs as it was causing cholesterol, that nasty stuff which clogs up your arteries. Then we should not eat red meat, terrible for you. Don’t eat salt, you might get a heart attack. Stuff yourself with sugar and trans fats. The list of erroneous information goes on and on.

When one now looks back, one sees a common line. The big companies invented new products to be able to satisfy public demand for new tastes. If they were healthy or not was beside the point. Now it is a food jungle out there and as the number of products one can eat only increases, it is getting more difficult by the day to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I personally think going back to nature would be the best option as man-made foods have a long list of unhealthy additives. Just try to read the label.

The following video I think, apart from being funny, is a good example of the confusion on food.

.

Man-made foods are bad for you

As our modern man-made food is laden with toxins, additives, bad sugars, and fats, you might be wondering how to get rid of this. These things will cause trouble in the long run. They cause or contribute to inflammation, which then progresses into something more serious, like leaking gut or cancer.

I believe that fasting on a regular basis helps our bodies get rid of most of these harmful things in our system. Have you considered fasting? Does that mean no food? Yes, it means no food for a certain period of time. How will I survive, you might think? Do not worry, one survives very well, one can live a long time without food but not without water/liquid.

The unusual story about an Indian Hermit

In December 2003, I read an article in the Town Crier, a small newspaper on the Costa del Sol. It does not exist anymore. A 70-year-old Indian Hermit was under observation in a hospital in Ahmedabad. It completely baffled the doctors and experts who were observing him, as during his 10 days in hospital he did not drink or eat and he did not pass urine or stool.

This hermit declared he had not eaten for decades. Mr. Jani said that he had been blessed by a goddess when he was only 8 years old. It puzzled the doctors how this man could reach this age in such an excellent condition.

The above story is of course extreme, but the fact is one can survive a long time without food. Animals, which are sick, often stop eating. They do this by instinct, and we humans would do well to take an example.

I can talk about this as I have experienced fasting periods since the beginning of the nineties. I happened to read a book written by Dr. Lutzner, titled Rejuvenate with fasting. After I had finished reading this interesting book, I thought I should try it at least once.

A very complete guide you should have

In this book, you will hear why fasting is good for you. Dr. Jason Fung, in collaboration with Jimmy Moore, will explain all the whys and hows you might have on fasting. You will get a 7-Day Kick-Start Fasting Plan and a list of healing liquid recipes.

At least try it once. After that, you probably will be convinced that a couple of fasting cures each year can do wonders for your health.

What happens when you fast

When one fasts after the first 3 days, one normally has no little hunger pains anymore. It might be you feel a bit weird, but that is due to the toxins circulating in the blood before they leave the body. In case you feel a bit tired, then have a small siesta. I believe one should give in to the body’s symptoms, one should really listen.

As you do not use your energy for the digestive process, all this energy is for you to decide how to use it. Years ago I was building a pergola for my Mother while on a fasting cure. I felt great with a lot of energy, even if I was doing quite heavy physical work.

I have also noticed one sleeps so well and the dreams one has kind of intensify with vivid colors. Very nice indeed.

What you can have

So what do I get if I am not allowed to eat, you might ask. I drink a lot of water, some herbal teas, homemade fresh vegetable juice, carrots, celery, beetroot, tomatoes, and an apple for taste. If I have spinach or lettuce in my vegetable garden, I will add some leaves.

In the winter, when it is chilly, I will make a vegetable soup to then drink only the broth. When one is fasting, one feels a bit colder soon, but that problem is easily solved with an extra pullover.

I normally feel very good after a fasting cure, lighter in body and mind. I lose 3 kg and 3 cm on my waist and hips. I think no woman would mind that. I have done up till now 41 fasting cures of 9 days each.

The last one was in Feb. 2017. As I have done it already so often I now tell myself some days in advance, hey, remember? We are going on a fasting cure in a couple of days. It is like switching a program.

Some last thoughts on fasting

One thing is very important. Take it easy when eating again. A couple of small and light things will do for the first day. For sure a big, heavy, and greasy meal could be dangerous and the same applies to tobacco and or alcohol.

It is also the ideal moment to stop smoking. The first cigarette after a fasting cure will taste more than disgusting. The ideal would be to do a cure for the change of season, but if not possible your body will thank you for doing it at least twice a year. You will feel so much better and full of energy.

I have made a special page for you. Before you leave, have a look at Recommendations. I hope you will find something interesting.

Hi Taetske

Very good information, highly appreciated for this article as I am planning to detoxify myself as well. I was just curious about the fruit and vegetables what you eat.

Do you have any daily recommended amount of vegetables or fruit to eat? I understand that you are probably very hungry first days so not sure if I can eat as much as my body ask for or have an exact number especially fruit?
Thanks for this information as I plan to start with my detox this weekend.

Have a wonderful day

Regards, Marty

    Good evening Marty,

Thank you for visiting my website and reading my post on detoxifying. Especially after the holidays it is a good thing to do a fasting cure. You asked me what fruits/vegetables are allowed, I suppose you mean during the cure? As I mentioned when I make homemade fresh juice, not a smoothie! I mainly use vegetables like carrot, celery, tomatoe, red and green peppers. You can also add an apple for taste, perhaps a cucumber and a little of fresh parsley. Too much fruit would be too much sugar so I would stay with only that 1 apple a day. In the soup you can put all kinds of vegetables but you can only drink the liqued. Some people do not like the taste of beetroot but it is very good for your blood. Also the taste of green cabbage is a bit strong so there a small piece would be enough, very good for ulcers. I personally would even put 1 little garlic but most people will think it is too strong.
For after the cure I would do partly raw and partly cooked. Try and stay away from man made foods, anything which is wrapped up and made in a factory.

In case you have anymore questions you can also contact me on my email which you will find on the About me page.

Wishing you a happy but especially healthy 2018.

Heather

Hi, thanks for these tips. I need your opinion on something. I have 2 forms of arthritis and sometimes I am in terrible pain. Do you think a fasting cure would help me?

I usually take care what I eat, and I always avoid processed foods. I try to focus on anti-inflammatory foods and they do help. I also tried several diets – but none of them helped me considerably. But now that I read your article, I’m thinking about starting up a fasting cure.

    Good evening Heather,

Sorry to hear you suffer from 2 forms of arthritis, I think a good cleaning will help to rid of toxins. When the body is “dirty” it shows in getting all kind of ailments. When you fast you give your digestive system a rest. This extra energy you can use for healing. After the fasting cure, you could try with 3 soupspoons of coconut oil a day. Eat nuts and seeds. No dairy, man-made foods, no soft drinks, sugar or artificial sweeteners. All things made with wheat. You can eat quinoa and spelt. When you eat red meat, not too often, only eat organically raised animals.

You are right. back to nature is the best thing to do. I have many different posts on my website you might care to read. Do let me know how your experience is.

Fasting was common time ago in many cultures. It is very good to detoxify our body. I remember and old friend of my family; she every Saturday and Sunday was in fasting time. She arrived her 80s with a beautiful skin and good health. I am trying to do but I didn’t, I have read a lot about but I never do it… I am committed to do this weekend 🙂

I really hope you will do your first fasting this coming weekend. The first time is the most difficult but with every time you do a fasting cure, it gets easier. I can tell you this as I have fasted more than 40 times in my life and each time was 9 days. Wishing you success and let me know your results.

I’m really learning new things here as I just learnt u can detoxify yourself with a fasting cure. Considering we have been trying to tinker with nature especially our food we consume. Our ancestors ate healthier, and organic food , now what you see around is cancer causing foods.

I’ve fasted several times in the past, found out I felt better and fresher.  I stopped eating greasy foods and cut down on alcohol. I also recommend fasting regularly too. Educative and inspirational post.

    Good evening Edwin,

Nice to meet another fasting fan. Our ancestors did not always have food available so they were forced to fast for longer periods. Nowadays we have food available 24 hours a day and look at how our health is, it is bad. Alcohol is ok now and then. I must admit I have a glass of red wine every evening and I should not forget that piece of black chocolate.

First, let me say that the value of the video you use in this post is worth it all, even if that was all you posted. The video is funny, but oh so accurate.

The great thing is you don’t just stop with a great truthful and humorous video, you add your own voice into this post as well. I truly believe that fasting is a lost discipline in our world today.

You do kind of hit on it I your post, but I would enjoy hearing more about how long is healthy to fast and not healthy to fast? Then maybe some light food menu suggestions to eat over the next few days as you come off a fast. What especially do you eat and does it change depending on the amount of time you were on a fast?

Thanks for the posting over this topic.

Dec 06.2018 | 02:42 pm

    Taetske

    Good Morning Todd.

You ask me what can be considered a healthy fast. Personally, whenever I have fasted, it has always been 9 days. This I have done more than 40 times in my life. There will be people who will say 1 week is enough and others might think 3 days will do it. As it takes some time for all the toxins to be flushed out I would say do it at least 7 days.

You can read in the bible that Jesus fasted 40 days in the desert and that is entirely possible. One can stay for a long period without food but only a few days without water. If you eat very little, like 500 calories, it will be extremely difficult. If you fast the digestive system shuts down so the way your body functions is entirely different. To fast for 9 days can be a little challenging as you might start thinking about the taste of chocolate, or cheese. Do not give in as with the first bite you break fast.

When you start eating again one has to be careful. I might have one thing for each meal like an apple, a yogurt, some nuts, I really take it easy. Then on the second day, I go back to normal but some people might need more time to adapt. We are all different.  Your body will tell you what feels good, one should listen more to what our body tells us.

Thank you for leaving a comment. I hope you downloaded your free PDF?

The video was hilarious and hit the point so well! It is constantly changing what’s good to eat and what’s not good to eat and if we should eat at all! Because I have type 2 diabetes, I hear and think about food and what I can or cannot eat all the time.

Getting back to nature is the way to go in my opinion. I’ve only fasted for one day in the past because I am kind of scared to do it for longer with the chance of my blood sugar going too low. I will consult with my healthcare team and see what they think would be a suitable time period. When I tell them I am going to do something, they generally listen to me because they know I believe in alternatives to medicine!

Thank you for sharing what has worked for you and how it made you feel. I will also share your site with my friends who are trying to get toxins and processed junk out of their bodies!

That is nice you want to share my website with the people you know. My posts are all health-related some way or the other.

We have turned away from nature and look what has happened. Even if science is advancing and apparently the medical system too, the population on a whole is only getting sicker. Ancient remedies are being rediscovered and let us not forget the Amazon Rainforest. Only some 10% of the Flora has been identified with all the healing properties. Nature provides for us we will only need to look and accept, something Big Pharma does not do as they cannot patent it.

arzu hosan

Thanks for your nice information, profoundly refreshing for this article as I am intending to detoxify myself also. I was only inquisitive about the products of the soil what you eat.

Do you have any day by day prescribed measure of vegetables or natural product to eat? I comprehend that you are most likely extremely hungry first days so not certain on the off chance that I can eat as much as my body request or have a precise number particularly natural product?

A debt of gratitude is in order for this data as I intend to begin with my detox this end of the week.

Have a nice day

Arcilla is clay and has been used through the ages by many different cultures. There are different types, orange, white, gray, and green colored Arcilla. It is said the best one for drinking is the green one. I buy it here in Spain in the health food shop.

When you do a fasting cure you detox your body but you do not eat anything solid, you only drink water, teas, freshly made juices, and broth. Fasting you give your digestive system a rest. I have just now finished 9 days of fasting, I have done that 45 times since the beginning 1990s.

You can do detox without fasting. One whole day you only eat blue grapes. Or you only eat salads and drink green smoothies. This is good to do a couple of times a month.

The first time you do a detox or a fasting cure you might feel a bit hungry but after some time that feeling goes away. When I go on a fasting cure I kind of prepare myself mentally. I tell myself I am going to do a fasting cure and then switch over to that program.

I wish you success with your detox.

    Regards, Taetske

Hello,

As a person having its niche in natural health, I found your article on fasting very interesting. I agree with you that man-made food is detrimental to our health, I myself am going through a detox from it. I was a huge fan of sodas and fast foods, but I want to get rid of it.

I already fasted in my life, but more for spiritual reasons than health reasons. And your article really opened my eyes on this practice. I’ll start to fast regularly maybe once a week. Thank you for your beautiful and informative article.

Cheers,

Elodie

Good to hear you are ridding yourself of sodas and fast food. Those are stupid human inventions that harm us. Big Pharma is enchanted, as there are so many sick people around. That fills their pockets and we get opioid addicted.

Mother nature provides for all our needs, so one should really think what one puts in one’s mouth. The consequences are far-reaching. The same as with a car. If you put bad quality petrol, it will not last long.

Informative post! I am really not the type of person to care about detoxifying my body. But with this post, I was shocked to know about the important need to cleanse our body. I am more of a type of a person who just cares about the outside appearance. So right now, I am planning to buy a tea so that I can start my cleansing. Hope it will be added to my daily routine and be effective.

    Good Morning Nico,

I can see you are still young but as time flies, it is a good idea to start thinking about your health. I started to make changes in my lifestyle in 1986. I started reading about food and went through my personal evolution. In May this year I turned 70 and am happy I can say that I am in a good shape. I take supplements, but no chemical pills of any kind.

I am not religious, but I have always considered that one of the positive aspects of religion: the fasting. So far I have only done 2 longer periods of fasting and that has been a while. Since a couple of years I am an intermittent faster. I skip dinner.
You say you lose 3 kilos and that is what is holding me back to detox for a longer period. I am 25 kilos lighter than I was when I was still living in the Netherlands and I don’t want to lose more weight. Maybe I should just try and see. I can always stop in between after all. 🙂
Thanks for the inspiration, Taetske. <3

    Good Morning Hannie,

Thank you for your visit and for your comment. Have you downloaded your free PDF? Tulip widget.

Yes, I lose 3 kg, but that is because the intestines are all empty. When you start eating again you gain at least 1 to 2 kg back.

Linda also said she likes intermittent fasting. I have tried that too for half a year but am now eating 3 meals a day. I have my breakfast at 09.30. For lunch we normally do our fruits, often with seeds, kefir, Greek yogurt and then at 20.00 we have dinner. That is often a big salad, or one warm plate, actually not much but I need my glass of tinto.

You could give it a try and as you say you can stop half way in case you do not like it.

Linda Frankson

Hi, Taetske. I have followed your work for some time know But didn’t have the chance to comment on this one. You know me busy, busy, busy.

Although I agree with you on many points, detoxing is very healthy, and fasting is a perfect way to eliminate toxins in the body, especially heavy metals.

Fasting is the right way is very necessary. Intermittent fasting is best for people to start with to get an understanding and get in touch with their bodies, and very easy to do.

A 12 hour fast can be started just by eating breakfast and a small lunch; usually, the biggest meal of the day is dinner.

After your Lunch, you go on the fast, no water or food for the next 12 hours. Depending on the time you had your last meal, you count the 12 hours your next meal would be the same hour you had your lunch.

For example, 2 PM to 2 Pm the next day. You can practice this once a week. I use this as an example because there are sleeping hours that you have that you will not feel and is the easiest to accomplish.

For those that are just learning to fast, this is an excellent way to start.

As for detoxing, I use a very special smoothie to detox your body every day of the week. It is a receipt that was given to me using spices and herbs from your kitchen cabinet.

That is another story for another time, but for those that want to start fasting and don’t have the science behind fasting, this is an excellent way to start.

It is always a pleasure to read your posts. I noted different dates on your comments and this post, so I know you are updating your work excellent the more power to you. Always a better way, Linda

    Good Morning Linda.

Always a pleasure to see you and thank you for your comment. Remember your free PDF? That company has tons of free PDFs, you can choose the one you like. Click on the Tulip widget.

Yes, I am updating old posts. I started at the beginning and it is a big job. When you revisit an old post it is not difficult to add something and check if all is still functioning. Sometimes it happens you find a YouTube has disappeared, well, that is a bore I must say.

During more than a half year I did this system of eating in a short time frame. The last food was at 20.00 hours and the next day we would start eating lunch at 14.00 hours. I must confess I did not like it very much and missed my breakfast. Now we have breakfast at 09.30, lunch at 15.00 and dinner at 20.00 including a nice glass of red wine.

Besides a fasting cure of 9 days what I do like is a day with only grapes or apples and of course a lot of liquid. Well, as they say each body is different and over time you will discover what suits you best.

Thank you for stopping by and hasta pronto.

    Regards, Taetske
