The necessity of clean drinking Water

Some thoughts on water

Have you ever thought about the quality of water when you turn on your kitchen tap?
I suppose you think your drinking water is clean and does not present a health hazard, This sadly may change for some 117 million Americans.

One chooses one’s leaders and hopes for the best, but this time it might mean an enormous problem and present a serious health risk to so many people.

We all need water and can not survive without it. Our planet could not survive without it. It is of utmost importance that we treat the available water from underground sources or rivers and lakes with respect, as water belongs to all of us.

Rules and regulations are good when chosen well, but to annul an existing law, put to safeguard the quality of water, is criminal. It seems that Mr. Trump, together with Mr. Pruitt, head of EPA, are planning to do just that. They plan on a rollback of the Clean Water Rule. If this happens, industry and agriculture can treat much of the nation’s water supply like an ashtray.

Dangers lurking in your water

Here is a list of contaminants that are often found in drinking water.

Lead: It seems that in some 20% of the water they found unsafe levels of lead.

Chromium-6: Remember the famous movie, Erin Brockovich? Now, some 17 years later, this cancer-causing chemical can be found in 75% of drinking water.

Polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Hormone disruption is linked to cancer and a lot of other health problems. These industrial chemicals, according to a Harvard study, are found in the water of 33 states, and they affect some 6 million Americans. Harvard Gazette: Unsafe Levels of Toxic Chemicals.

Pharmaceuticals: People go to the doctor and are prescribed some pills. Taking the pills during some weeks, where do you think the residues end up? Painkillers, birth control pills, antibiotics, antidepressants, all this and more are found in normal tap water.
It seems that some 41 million Americans are contaminated with these trace amounts of pharmaceuticals.

Chlorine: It is normally added to the water to kill dangerous pathogens, but after killing the enemy it is not filtered out so you drink it. Many studies have shown that chlorine is dangerous for our microbiome, which is important to our digestive and overall health.
Chlorine has been linked to some types of cancer and heart disease, asthma, birth defect rates, etc.

Fluoride: In the fifties, the news came from America to Europe that one had to add fluoride to the drinking water, as it would prevent tooth decay. Now, one knows it is actually the other way around. Fluoride is an endocrine disruptor and can affect many organs and systems in our body. The teeth go bad, bones get brittle, the thyroid gland is affected, and even blood sugar levels go array.

Asbestos: It is a silicate mineral and occurs in nature. When the microscopic fibrils are set free through abrasion or other processes, they float in the air. If you then happen to breathe that air, especially working in this air for long periods, your health is in peril. Another way that is harmful to your health is when asbestos is in your drinking water.

A helpful book

This is a very complete book, which takes a serious look at the issues surrounding the drinking water supply in America. You will be informed about the different filters for your home and the different kinds of water you can buy on the market.

Beware of water in plastic bottles

Many people opt to buy bottled water, spending hundreds to thousands of $ a year. There are 2 problems with that, as you do not know how long the water has been standing in those plastic bottles. Then there is something else to consider.

Our planet is flooded with plastic in all its sizes, colors, and shapes. The damage to our environment is obvious. Protecting our health should not be at the expense of the rest of the planet. So having a central water purification system in our house is paramount to eliminating plastics and maintaining a healthy water supply.

This article, which I found in The Food Revolution Network, is always an excellent source. Lindsay Oberst wrote it.

Clean water for all

I just came across a wonderful program that for over 10 years has been working toward the goal of everyone having access to clean water. This organization is called “Charity: Water” and they are starting a new promotion called “The Spring,”

Charity: Water declares that 100% of donations go directly to construction projects for clean water in under-developed regions of the world, and they provide coordinates, with Google Earth’s help, to provide the exact locations of the projects they have constructed.

I invite you to watch this video and believe you can make a difference.

Conclusion

How will we be able to get our clean and healthy water in the future? In many places worldwide, people have to walk for miles to get their daily ration. When our planet has enough for everybody, why do we waste these resources? We have definitely chosen the wrong direction.

I would like you to look at the following video, it shows what we are doing. We are killing our own habitat.

An afterthought

I wrote this post in July 2017 and many things have happened these past 3 years. I came across this long list of the National Geographic on the environmental laws of EPA and President Trump.

I have made a special page for you with things you might find interesting. Before you leave, have a look at Recommendations.

We do not only have a right to clean water, but we also have a right to clean air. In many regions, the air is so polluted that people suffer connected ailments. There are places where we are not aware of foul air. The following post is a warning. You might not have heard about this before.

Thank you for speaking out about the issue of water. It is at situation critical for sure as are so many things these days and so it seems like the basic fundamental things get forgotten. Have you heard anything about lead in the water recently? I heard something about there being a number of major cities that have tested worse for lead than Detroit. But I don’t know if that was verified or swept under the rug.

    Good Morning Gord,

I think everyone has heard about the issues of Flint Michigan. I have not heard about any other new issues (yet) in the upper Midwest.  I am sure with aging infrastructure, there will be problems.  My better half spent a number of years in the water and wastewater treatment industry.  He tells me that there are a number of issues regarding who is responsible for the state of our water.  Of course you can identify that there is a concern with the raw water at its source.  There is also the issue of the treatment systems and their costs, but there is also the issue of the aging delivery systems.

The old systems can be anything from ceramic tubes, to lead pipes, to copper soldered with lead based solder, to very old systems with wood (yes wood) pipes.  You can imagine that an organic system made from wood slats and bound with steel bands would harbor millions of microorganisms.

Water systems are always under the gun to upgrade their treatment and delivery systems.  If the community is poor or has not allocated funds for continuous improvements, you may see a decline in the water quality.  I think it is very important for you (the citizen) to keep informed of what your water utility is capable of doing and what future challenges they will face.

Thank you for visiting my website,

Hi Taetske,

I really I’m impressed that a country so advanced like the USA, does not guarantee its citizens clean running water, a basic right for every citizen. It’s not only the Erin Brockovich story, it’s also Flint in Michigan that has the same problems nowadays. Profits over health. Sad really.

In this case I’d suggest using water filtering. There are a lot of appliances for the home that can secure clean water.

Thanks for writing about a very sensitive subject. Keep up the good work!

Often profit over health one can find everywhere, be it big Pharma, our food etc. We should be vigilant and well informed. A water filter is a good idea to stay on the safe side.

Hello there. Hope you are having a nice time… Thank you for sharing this article. I enjoyed reading through. Indeed everyone has right to clean water. Getting education about how to keep our water clean and of course good governance will go a long way in this matter. This article is educative as well. Kudos.

When I have visited various parts of the world, my tastebuds have always dictated whether water is good or not.  Precautions are high on the list before any water is tasted, so that eliminates any bad effects of contaminated water.

But it makes sense that if the world is popping pills, there has to be an exit point somewhere, and that would be in the water system.  Here I blame this on the medical profession as it seems any pill is described for any ailment, and it becomes a hit and miss scenario.  I speak from experience and thus I prefer to use natural remedies.

The most disturbing point I read in your article is that fluoride is a danger to our organs.  Now don’t we all use fluoride toothpaste?  If this point is true, which I presume it is, then it means that the makers of toothpaste are actually harming us by providing fluoride in the toothpaste!

Do you have an answer for this point?  I look forward to your reply.

    Good afternoon Edu,

You are quite right to prefer natural remedies above so-called medicine. Pills always have nasty side effects which in general you do not find with natural products.

Fluoride is very harmful to us. It has a nasty and old history related to the Nazis. In the early 1950s, my Father was director of a private water company in Holland. At that time came the news from the U.S. that one should add fluoride to the drinking water. My Father said I will not force my customers to drink water with Fluoride if they want it they can buy toothpaste. It has been proven that fluoride does not help your teeth to stay healthy, rather the contrary. As one does not swallow toothpaste the damage is minimal. Drinking it is, of course, something different.

I am happy that on my farm I have my own water.

Hi

It is really funny that I was having a similar conversation the other day with friends and the debate was drinking water from the tap verses drinking water from a plastic bottle and which one was better for you.

For this reason I will be sharing this article with them to get them thinking about what they were saying.

Knowing what is in our tap water is really scary but at the same time it is a need to know.

Plastic bottles are becoming a big problem for the environment

I feel that many solutions are needed now more than ever and building awareness around this topic so thank you for this article.

Plastic bottles are polluting the world and the substances in plastic is harmful for our health. Not so easy to remain healthy these days. Best is to be as informed as possible to then make the right choice. This includes knowing what is in the water coming out of the tap in your home.

Thank you for touching on issues regarding water, a lot has being said about the cleanliness of the water we take from our taps. The only solution I think that people can take is have their own water purification systems but not everyone can afford this. I like the work Charity Water are doing, ensuring everyone has clean water worldwide.

Is there a home based water purification system you can advise one to get especially for one who has drilled their own underground water supply system?

Living on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean it is sometimes difficult to understand the policies and politics unravelling in the USA. However the rights to resources essential for life is one that is universally understood and when threatened one that historically is universally fought for.

In the UK we are currently juggling the very same balls that our American cousins find themselves faced with. And before either of our governments jump into bed with industries that threaten our basic human rights, they need to cast their minds back not too far, not only in time but also in distance to see the catastrophes that unfold when access to clean drinking water is denied.

Nov 15.2018 | 12:38 pm

    Taetske

    Good Morning Adrian,

I am afraid that the bed you are talking about has been occupied a long time already by big Pharma, Monsanto, and various governments making deals in their favor and behind our backs.

The more I investigate the more nasty stuff I discover and it gets difficult to believe in those people. The population as a whole is a test lab. I read that by the year 2020 there will be mandatory vaccinations for children as well as adults. Where is this leading to? It does not look good.

We all have a right to clean water, a roof over our head, education, food, and healthcare. For the human race to realize we are all equal and learn to live in harmony, till then we will continue to struggle to survive.

The necessity of clean drinking water is all i wanted to hear .Some people certainly think that water comes from the tap and they dont think it is from rivers where there are a lot of pathogens that are dangerous for our health. You make me curious about water in bottles, i think purifying my own water is the best way to be sure i am drinking fresh and clean water.

Nov 15.2018 | 12:39 pm

    Good Morning Nkhosingiphile,

I would say to not drink water from plastic bottles, it is not good for your health and it pollutes the environment. If you think your tap water is not good then the best thing you can do is to install a good water filtering system.

I am so happy you shared this information. Drinking water is an essential part of most healthy recommendations. You are advised to drink water as prevention and in treatment of most health problems and to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Safe water is really a critical issue as most times water treatment is not done properly or certain harmful products maybe used to treat the water and as a result put us at risk for various illnesses.

Looking forward to read more about this.

Nice to hear you like my post. Water is something all humans need and nature cannot be without it either. We should take good care and stop polluting our waters, we would all benefit from it. I drink a lot of water each day, I actually like it plus 1 glass of nice red wine.

It’s great that you bring forth how to maintain the clear drinking water in the world. Along with slowing climate change, this issue is one of the most important things to secure people’s well-being in the future. Everyone should know that there is an organization Charity: Water that is investing in these things in underdeveloped states. I am going to take care of myself for a donation to this organization.

Thanks for sharing potential information about water. Yes i do agree with you to be care especially with the bottle water. Before we were told to check on expired date but again anything with expire date means its not natural i mean something has been added inside also many company nowadays there are not real, everyone is busy making money and forget about the humanity so they can even cheat the expire date and let us to buy the water which is already been expired and that is even more bad to our healthy. I think the best way is to carry water from home and fill in our own bottle this way is more safe because you will know how long you have kept the water inside your bottle and if it will still be good for drinking or not unless we real really need to buy the ready made one and  when we don’t have other option and this  should be the last option.

I agree with you that in case the water you have in your home is good you can fill up your water bottle and take it with you. Like that, you save a lot of money. I suppose you use a glass bottle as all those plastic bottles pollute the environment and are not good for your health either.

Whenever one can avoid plastic bottles. Our environment is polluted with all the plastic humans think they need. I am blessed with having own water on my little farm and the test gave it a thumbs up, so good.

The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat are of utmost importance. It depends on the quality of these things if we arrive at a healthy old age or not. Choose your leaders with care as your health depends on it.

I saw Zac Efron Down to Earth documentary the other day and I have to say that France is doing something right. They think that drinking water should be free and accessible. They have these drinking water stations, some with carbonated one, throughout out the city. It is the other way around in France. If you do not have your own water bottle, there is a vending machine that sells only an empty bottle and you can go get water. I think that we in the states should follow them. We all should have rights to clean water and fresh air, period. It is a basic human rights.

I am sick to my stomach that there are many contaminants in our water. Fluoride is the worst one of all and I am still confused. Why are we still using it to brush our teeth? I will check out the book you suggested.

    Good Morning Nuttanee,

Nice to see you again and thank you for your comment.

I agree with you that is a clever setup they have in France. I had not heard about that yet. There is an overload of plastic bottles in the world. Glass bottles would be much better.

In the 1950s my Father was director of a private water company, providing water to 7 cities in Holland. That was the time when from America the news came you need Fluoride in your water. He said that he was not going to medicate his clients so did not put it in the water. You can buy toothpaste if you want Fluoride. Now we know it is dangerous. Having it in your drinking water can cause serious health problems.

When one realizes that worldwide more than 2000 million have no drinkable water available and have to walk long distances to get water, it becomes obvious we are privileged. I open the water tap and very good water comes out.

We all have a right to good water and that is why we should keep an eye on the authorities.

How is the situation in Europe? Lots of regulations are similar in the US and the EU, others are different. I am aware of the medicines ending up in the water. I know it’s a big problem in Holland, but have no idea how that is in the rest of Europe?

Overall I think one is better off in Europe than in the U.S. Did you see the link to the National Geographic list of laws at the end of my post? When existing laws that are meant to protect the people and the environment are weakened or even taken away what can one expect?.
I see what has happened in Spain where I have lived since 1975. The laws get better over time. Less pesticides, more recycling, fines if you pollute the environment, etc. I know much needs to be done still and it is not easy as there are more people each year but at least one should try to improve, not the other way around.
