The Leaky Gut syndrome, a serious health condition caused mainly by modern food

Your gut health

Your health starts in your gut, and that is a fact. Scientists have identified that the biology in your intestines affects all parts of your body. If your digestive system is not functioning properly, it may contribute to this condition also called intestinal hyper-permeability.

This condition is directly related to gluten sensitivity and has even been linked to some forms of cancer. Just imagine what can happen when your intestines are allowing bacteria that digest your food to gain access to the organs in your abdominal cavity.

When you eat too much man-made food and for too long, it increases your chances of having a reaction from your leaking gut. What I define as man-made foods include unhealthy fats, sugar, or even more dangerous chemical sweeteners. These processed foods include preservatives, pesticides, GMOs, and artificial colorings.

This food, which is void of healthy fibers, is made in factories and is far from nature’s whole foods. It will make you sick in the long run. Your body has difficulty in digesting it, and often pieces are left undigested to lie and rot in your intestines. The lining of the tubes is being attacked by these acids and in the long run, will form small holes.

Just imagine your car has a perforated exhaust pipe. When this happens, small particles get into your bloodstream and your immune system becomes overloaded and will turn extremely sensitive. Of course, when this happens on a regular basis, your immune system will not be able to cope anymore, resulting in chronic inflammation. Your immune system will start attacking its own healthy cells instead of battling the enemy.

How do you know if you have a leaking gut?

There are some telltale signs which show this.

How has your mood been lately, you are not feeling on top of the world? Our body is a complex system where everything is related. It has been proven that people who are depressed are the ones who are more likely to have a leaking gut. When you have inflammation and your immune system is off, it is no wonder you cannot feel well.

Do you often get sick? That is another sign of the possibility of a leaking gut. Your immune system does not work properly, so your defense is low.

Your skin, which is your biggest organ, might also tell you something is wrong. Skin rashes and pimples might burst out. Your skin also forms a barrier against the outside and when there is internal inflammation, this barrier gets weaker. Lactobacillus seems to be helpful in this case, as was shown in a Korean study linked here.

Your bones and joints could start hurting. If your system is not clean, it could be the start of arthritis.

A detox is called for, giving your digestive system a rest so it can heal itself.

Have you noticed more brain fog, do you have food allergies or migraines? All these symptoms could indicate you have a leaking gut.

Natural remedies

Have you heard about Ayurvedic Medicine? This is a method of evaluating illnesses and treating them with natural remedies. Its origins date back 6000 years. Kerala in India is considered the birthplace of this healing method and in Kerala, is the AyurMana, which means “ancient healing house”, the oldest one worldwide.

Upon visiting an Ayurvedic doctor, he will start talking about the importance of the gut. And if warranted, he will prescribe a little-known herb called Triphala.

The name Triphala comes from Sanskrit and means tree fruits. It is a mixture of Amlaki (Indian Gooseberry), Haritaki (this comes from the Terminalia tree), and Bibhitaki (from the Bahera tree). A blend is made from dried and powdered rinds and flesh of these 3 fruits.

This is a powerful gut healer. It acts like a very efficient detoxifier for the intestines, colon, blood, and liver and has been known for ages as a solution for constipation.

The Benefits of Triphala

A study at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute confirms that Triphala prevents and slows the growth of pancreatic cancer tumors. There are other studies that confirm that Triphala repairs the holes in your intestines and rebalances your intestinal mucus.

Triphala powder can be bought in nearly all Indian grocery stores. You can make a tea which one should drink on an empty stomach before meals or at bedtime.

½  a teaspoon of the powder into a cup of boiling water.
It tastes bitter, so one can add a bit of honey and some Indian clarified butter.
You can also buy it as a supplement, recommended is 1000mg a day. In the liquid form, you need a dropper full together with water or juice before your meals.

Dr. Al Sears is an antiaging doctor in the US. I get his newsletters regularly and find a lot of valuable information there.

A helpful book

You might not think so, but if your gut is not healthy, the rest of your body will not be healthy either. Here are only a few of the symptoms LGS may cause.

You can get digestive complaints, acid reflux, IBIS, Crohn’s disease.

Aching joints, muscle pain, and arthritis.

Obesity and food allergies can be traced back to your gut.

All kinds of skin issues like rashes, eczema, acne, rosacea, and psoriasis.

A traditional physician probably will not understand LGS, how to diagnose, and much less treat it. About 80% of people with chronic illnesses have leaky gut. They do not have enough good bacteria and too many bad bacteria in their gut. By reading this book, you will have all the information needed to keep your gut healthy.

    Good evening Kathleen,

Thank you for visiting my website and leaving a comment.

All these modern type of ailments, leaky gut being one of them, are mainly caused by our lifestyle.

If people would take more care and think about what they put in their mouth we could avoid a lot of them.

This is a battle against man-made foods to then cure the negative effects with nature made remedies.

Great article Taetske! I must agree with you that our lifestyle is the only culprit for leaky gut and many other diseases. Today people often eat junky food full of gluten and calories and on top of that without any physical activity. I will share this post and hope that many people will read it.

    Good Morning Daniel

Thank you for your comment, I am happy you find this article helpful. I hope you have downloaded your free PDF?

We eat too much junk food, that is for sure. Then there is GMO, pesticides, and plastics to just name a few. It is not so easy to find the right balance. Going back to nature   is a step in the right direction.

Hi and thanks for the informative topic on the digestive system. I didn’t think there would be a natural powder that could be as beneficial as the one described here. Is it a good idea to include this as part of an overall healthy diet too? I thank if people were more aware of what goes into processed foods they would eat much more healthier food groups. Kenny

    Good Morning Kenny,

The human body is amazing and when treated right will stay healthy for many years.

In the case you have some digestive problems I would give Thepala a try. Go to a shop where oriental herbs are sold I bet you will find it. Man-made foods are bad for you, try to eat more natural foods.

Thank you for your visit and leaving a comment.

Nuttanee

Thank you for this informative post. I did not know that eating a lot of processed food can lead to leaky gut… Omg it is time to start changing my eating habits. I have also noticed that I have a lot of rashes starting last year but it got worse this year. I thought it might be the allergic reaction to my lotion, but I still use the same brand. So, leaky gut could be the cause of my pimples. Where can I find Triphala powder?

    Good afternoon Nuttanee,

Nice to see you again. Thank you for your comment.

I did say that Triphala can be bought in most Indian grocery stores, you must have missed that in my post.

I have added some Amazon links as there you can also buy the pills or powder. Depending on your age pimples can have various reasons. Hormonal imbalance, stress, wrong foods, etc. Perhaps a detox or fasting cure might help.

I make my face lotion myself as it is the best and cheapest. I buy 1 liter of Rose Water and put a little bit of Alcohol 96%. In the summertime, I put a bit more alcohol. I clean my face morning and evening with this lotion.

eeerrrr I can believe that we have been eating these kinds of food the whole life. Honestly, the first time in my life that I know there is a case called gut leakage. The best way to avoid this kind of illness is to be a vegetarian. Stop eating animals and all kind of meat. Just list some type of fruits and dark green vegetables in your meal and totally avoid the two white dangerous toxins which are sugar & salt and replace them with organic fruits and vegetables.

I am not a vegetarian myself but I eat little meat as I am more a fan of my happy chicken eggs. I agree with your comment minus one thing. We need salt but there are various salts on the market which are dangerous. Take the Himalayan salt, that is a good one. I will give you the link on a post I wrote about salt.

Thanks for sharing this information, the modern diet is not great for our bodies and we still seem to wonder why our bodies are failing us more.

This Triphala sounds like a good supplement to take to get your digestive system back on track.  But would you recommend the tea or the supplement?

Thanks

    Good afternoon John,

Thank you for your comment. I hope you downloaded your free PDF?

You are right, the modern diet is far from the best and that is why our health goes down the drain. When we turned away from nature and started to make “edible stuff” ourselves that definitely was the moment where it went wrong.

I cannot really answer your question as I think it depends on what type of person you are. Do you take the time to make tea and like to drink it? If yes go for the powder form of Triphala. If on the contrary, you eat other supplements on a regular basis I would just add 1 more pill.

Twack Romero

Hello,

I have just finished reading through your topic on the ‘Leaky gut Syndrome” and  found it fascinating. I have long been an advocate of using more natural methods to repair the imbalances we have in our bodies. You have given me an insightful look into something I was completely unaware of. I love to learn new things. Sometimes the smallest of changes can make the greatest differences. I am sure that some of the symptoms you have described will resonate with many and they will indeed follow through and at least try your alternative. I think they will be very pleased with the results. To become who we are today has taken millions of years in evolution, yet we expect our bodies to cope with our modern day diet, which has gone from natural to processed to synthetic in the space of a couple of hundred years. Thank you again.

Good afternoon Twack, ( I hope that is your name?)

Thank you for leaving a comment on my website. I hope you downloaded your free PDF?

I am happy you found my post of interest and that it gave you some unknown information. The more natural we eat the healthier we will be. Man-made foods have caused so many ailments but people do not seem to realize this. We are being brainwashed with misleading advertisements, take Coca Cola or Mc Donald. On top of it, we pollute the air we breathe and the water we drink. Radiation is everywhere, the total does not paint a positive picture and is a reflection of our own stupidity.

Thanks for publishing a very useful, informational post on leaky guts. I’ve heard and read about the impact of artificial sweeteners on the gut and the microflora. Over the last several years, I have reduced grain and highly processed foods consumption primarily for weight management and inflammation reduction. And have switched to cooking with ghee and coconut oils. (Now if only I could get my wife to stop using vegetable oil, I would be happy). Anyway, I didn’t think of adding ghee to bitter drinks.

    Good afternoon Glen,

Thank you for your comment. I hope you downloaded your free PDF?
I can see you are doing a lot of good things for your health. Ghee, coconut oil, and olive oil are ideal for cooking.
You did not tell me what vegetable oil your wife uses, I hope it is not canola.
I have written various posts on these things, please have a look.

Love your article on how changing one’s diet can save the world. After watching a lot of documentaries and reading articles, I get more and more concerned about how my habits and lifestyle impact the world. I’ve been seriously considering a lifestyle change starting with my food intake. I’ve been spending more time lately reading up on how to start with the transition and this article provided a lot of information. Thanks.

    Good afternoon Ernst,

It is very good to become conscious that what we eat has an impact on ourselves but also the world. Our total lifestyle has an impact on everything. It is not always easy to change eating habits. Our taste buds get accustomed to certain flavors of foods even if they are not healthy. Probably changing one or two things at a time will be easiest. Cutting down on man-made foods slowly but surely. You will see your health will thank you. I wish you success.

Thank you for your comment. I hope you downloaded your free PD

I have to say that I like the modern life in some ways. Living in a modern life makes my life easier, but it is not always good, especially when it is related to man-made foods. I don’t like artificial food colors. I don’t think we have to make the foods look like a rainbow or a peacock. Natural foods are far more healthier. I like your information, I like your healthy detox recipes and I agree with you. I love natural remedies (homemade remedies).

Very helpful information for many people. Thanks.

Nature has the best colors and tastes, man-made foods are really not a good invention and only cause ailments. We become used to bad stuff and find it difficult to make a change in lifestyle and diet. A good detox now and then can do wonders. Nice to hear you found my post helpful.

Thank you for this article. I have been having so many digestive issues lately, and have just now been able to find a health insurance I can afford for the time being. (Hooray, for America’s wonderful health care system!)

After my appointment, if I find out that it isn’t anything serious. I will have to definitely come back here and take this into consideration. I know for sure that I need to change my diet to be more healthy. I’m also very interested in the herb you mentioned, Triphala. It sounds wonderful. Thank you for this informative post, I’ve never heard of leaking gut before. It gives me a bit of hope that I can fix my problems I have been having lately. Thank you!

    Good afternoon Tfousle,

I really hope all will be ok and that you will make some healthy changes. I have gone through, what I call, my personal food evolution. I grew up in Holland, bread, butter, and marmalade and of course meat, potatoes, and vegetables.

When I stopped working in 1986 I really started working hard on my farm in the south of Spain. That was the time when I got interested in food and what it does to the body. Slowly but surely I changed the things I was eating and was happy how I was feeling. I think, now many years later my health is better than at that time.

Thank you for your comment. I hope you downloaded your free PDF?

Trevor

This is a very welcome article on leaky gut syndrome.  Did you know there is now a proven connection between the gut and the brain? Having good gut health is essential to our overall body health including our brain, as poor gut health can lead to inflammation and serious diseases such as dementia. Your suggestion to try Ayurvedic Medicine, is I think a valuable idea.  I will be saving this url so I can refer to it later.

When you go to the tulip widget in the sidebar, you can download a PDF of your choice.

Yes, the brain/gut connection is something one did not hear much about in the past. Luckily, we now know how important it is. At the moment, I am looking at the Alzheimers series. 12 Days, each day 1 hour with groundbreaking info from special doctors. Alzheimers, Dementia, Parkinson are all caused by our modern lifestyle and food and can be prevented and also reversed. In case you are interested, let me know.
