Beware of Franken-foods, they are bad for you

Have you heard the word Franken-foods before but do not really know what it means? I will help you with an explanation to lift all doubt. This definitely is not a healthy alternative and I will explain why.

Do not try to improve on Nature

Before we go into this I would like to ask you this question. Why is it that humans always want to improve on nature? I have written a post on the excessive use of plastic wrappings. Why should one need to wrap fruits and vegetables which come in their own natural protective wrapping, their peel or skin? Then we also want to improve the taste? Why is that? An apple should taste like an apple not like a banana right?

The biotech industry is doing some brainwashing again. They are doing their best to improve the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. One should really ask how they are manipulating the things we will be eating. Just imagine, would you like to eat peach-flavored strawberries?

Monsanto is considered the most hated company worldwide. They have earned their reputation, no doubt about that. Whatever they do should be closely observed as it will have an effect on our health. That is why one should be informed of the latest happenings, this is important for you and your family.

GMO is updating

You have probably heard of GMO. It is nearly everywhere and it is bad for us. As if this is not enough, some more and more dangerous manipulation is coming our way. Have you heard of a company called Pairwise Plants? This is a new California-based company helmed by two Harvard scientists. One would think what comes from Harvard is good, well not in this case as science can be used for good and bad.

Pairwise Plants has come up with something really pretty. It is a gene-editing tool, known as CRISPR-Cas9 (an acronym for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) I know, it is a mouthful. Normal GMO technology inserts foreign genes within a plants genome. This new gene editing tool goes a step further and deletes or changes genes already in the plant DNA code.

Monsanto is at it again

Monsanto has invested 125 million in Pairwise and has become the exclusive collaborator. This happened in March 2018 and should make us be on alert.

This new tool can change the look and also flavor of fruits and vegetables. It would be possible to heighten the content of carotenoids, or of the cancer-fighting substance sulforaphane. Somehow it sounds good because one gets the impression that fruits and vegetables get more healthy for us having more nutrients, vitamins, minerals, etc. The fact that these changes happen faster than with the traditional GMO crops, which take years to change, this new method makes it possible to have these enhanced edibles come on the market after one or two crops. What should we worry about, sounds very positive don’t you think?

It is by far not so good as you might think

You have all heard the word mutations. You might relate this to a horror film where people mutated to zombies. Wikipedia explains that mutations result from errors during DNA replication or damage caused by exposure to radiation or carcinogens. Many of the foods that are available at the market have high levels of glyphosate and other niceties added. This can cause havoc on our DNA and as our systems start the repair process, our DNA can be modified in the wrong way.

Now comes the bad news

Last May in Nature Methods a study was published. It was found that this new tool CRISPR was causing mutations. Not the mutations they were intended to provoke, these mutations, call it a side effect of this method, were happening by the hundreds and were not intended. You could say that the scientists who were meddling with DNA codes, lost control over their experiment. These tests were performed on mice. Now you might discount this because it happened with mice and not with humans. That is where the problem lies.

Unforeseen Mutations

Molecular geneticist and GMO expert Dr. Michael Antoniou warns that even the smallest changes could cause unintended effects. Imagine when the function of an enzyme is disrupted, this can call forth unpredictable biochemical reactions. The computers used to screen for the appearances of these unforeseen mutations were not able to find them.

There you see that interfering with nature can have serious consequences, many of which we have no idea what they are. When we start to eat foods that are manipulated on a DNA level, what will happen next nobody can say. But it seems sure that this type of food will soon be standing on the shelves.

Information which is hidden from us

3 days after Monsanto joined in partnership with Pairwise, the study was officially retracted, swept under the carpet. It is happening again. Monsanto has always claimed Roundup is not dangerous for our health. Now they have hundreds of court cases coming their way. In the first case of Mr. Johnson claiming he is dying because of using Roundup for many years, Monsanto was found guilty and fined more than 200 million in compensation to Mr. Johnson.

Monsanto avoids responsibility, again

In the U.S. there is no obligation to put GMO on a food label. This pleases Monsanto. Now they are again squeezing themselves out of responsibility again. The USDA is not going to put strict regulations for CRISPR modified fruits and vegetables. Their reasoning is that this could have happened in nature through traditional plant breeding methods and everything is fine. As the CRISPR does not add genes, it only changes or deletes them, these foods are not considered GMO and that is why Monsanto gets away with it.

Some restrictions

In the past, Monsanto has forced farmers to buy new seeds, from Monsanto of course, as they had produced sterile “terminator” seeds. It will not be allowed to use this new method on seeds and spread genetic traits.  Also, CRISPR is not to be used to modify tobacco used for smoking. The restrictions are far too few to feel safe as the consumer is being kept in the dark as usual.

GM Watch

This non-profit organization provides the people with the latest news on GMO. They say that this new genome-editing should be at least as strictly regulated as the “normal” GMO. Well, we have seen that it has been far from good or positive for our health. This meddling with nature is like opening the box of Pandora. The only way we can defend ourselves is being informed about what is happening. Boycott all products which contain GMO and buy organic to stay on the safe side.

Here is a list of all the companies who produce products containing GMO. Monsanto is laughing in the background. Do not let this harm you or your family.

An afterthought

More and more I feel cheated and realize that the health of the population is not important to the food producers of the world. We are being manipulated on a big scale. The only defense one has is to boycott these products and eat organic as often as possible.

There’s nothing better than organic, fresh food that has not been manipulated. I agree, apples should not tastes like bananas and grapes should not take like cherries. But real food, doesn’t look picture perfect, but it tastes so great. The industry tries to change food to grow faster, resistant to bugs, and …, but there are so many techniques that are natural to help in all areas of food production. Thanks for the post.

    Good Morning JB,

Thank you for visiting my website and leaving a comment. I hope you have downloaded your free PDF?

I live on an organic farm and we use natural ways to better the soil. On my orange field, all the leaves and small grasses are plowed in a couple of times per year. In the vegetable garden, the bio leftovers from the kitchen are used. Even if the tomatoes are not always as pretty looking as store bought the taste is way better. Back to nature is the best we can do.

There is so much going on with big pharma and the food industry at the moment. I feel we are constantly being lied to, just so that these companies can make a profit. While some actually have our best interest at heart, most of them are only in it for the bottom line.

Messing with DNA is a dangerous thing in my view, because there is still too much we don’t know about it so the side effects cannot be foreseen and can have horrible effects. Beside that, using GMO will destroy the diversity of crops and is there for much more vulnerable.

These developments really, really concern me.

    Good Morning Linda,

I can only agree with you. I also think that big Pharma is not very interested in making us healthy. When healthy they do not earn money.

All this messing with DNA I do not like either as what will happen in the future. because of it. is completely unknown. To be forced to eat GMO I find horrible as nature provides good and healthy food. Eating GMO has a big impact on our health so I do not understand this and prefer to eat organic.

Thank you for your comment. I hope you downloaded your free PDF?

Eli

I checked on the link you provided about the 68 Monsanto-Onwed Companies to Boycott. They are all famous and widely used in every household around the world. One boycott won’t do any damage to them, somehow, good for our health. Thanks for this blog. It opened my eyes to the reality of Franken foods.

    Good Morning Eli,

Thank you for leaving a comment on my website. I hope you downloaded your free PDF?

You are right, these products are known and used worldwide. In general, one is, most of the time, able to find a healthier substitute. The more people do that the less money these companies earn at cost of our health.

Sydney

Very informative! I had no idea that all this was going on. It’s seems as though they tried to do something good, but what they should realize is organic foods are good enough, and already come equipped with cancer fighting properties. The earth is already looking out for us and provides everything we need, if only we could come together and treat it just as well.

    Good Morning Sydney,

Thank you for reading my post and leaving a comment. I hope you downloaded your free PDF?

I agree with you that organic is the best. There really is no need to constantly want to improve nature as nature knows best. Yes, we should take better care of Mother Nature as it would be a benefit for us all.
