The many differences between drinking cold and warm water

I live in the south of Spain and in the summer, it can get boiling, like 40C. When it gets that hot, there is nothing nicer than a big cold drink of water. Our body is made up of 60% water and we cannot survive long without it.

The question is if it is good for you to drink freezing water?. There seems quite a big difference between having an ice-cold drink compared to a warm one. Drinking water that is too cold has some adverse effects on your body, so you better be informed about it.

Some reasons why you should not drink ice cold water

  1. As the body has a normal temperature of 37 degrees Celsius when you drink a freezing drink, there is a problem. To bring your body back to its normal temperature requires a lot of energy. It takes this away from other bodily functions, such as your need to digest food and absorb its nutrients.
  2. Those same as a cold draft, extremely cold water might give you a sore throat, because it could cause respiratory mucosa to build up. It also can cause an infection and then you have no voice left. I remember when I was small, I often suffered from this condition. It was painful and I could not eat.
  3. I suffer from a headache once or twice a year, this being caused by atmospheric low pressure. I did not know that women who had a migraine in the last year have a double chance of getting a headache drinking cold water.
  4. Most of the time, having a cold drink of water will include added ice cubes. Especially when going on a holiday, one has to be careful about adding ice. Often the water can be contaminated with bacteria and fungus. I have worked many years as a tourist guide, and I used to warn my tourists to not ask for drinks with ice cubes. Of course, this depends on which countries you are spending your holidays in. Spain seems to be quite OK nowadays.

Check your drinking water

Contaminated ice can also be the case when making ice at home. The remedy for this is to use the utmost hygiene when preparing the water for making ice cubes. Always wash your hands before. In case your water is not good you might opt for a water filter so that the ice-cubes do not taste strange.

They have proven that ice-cold drinks can cause health issues, but what about bathing in ice-cold water? That seems to be very healthy as it strengthens your immune system. It is said to reduce stress. That is positive as our modern life is full of stress-causing situations. It makes you more alert as the cold forces you to breathe more deeply.

This decreases your CO2 and you can concentrate better. You will get more white blood cells in your blood which will fight diseases. I must say that for nearly 7 months a year, I do shower cold but in the winter; I take warm ones.

Let us get back to drinking water

1. There seem to be many benefits to consuming a drink of warm water instead of an ice-cold drink. It is said that drinking warm water provides pain relief against things like abdominal and menstrual cramps. It is a good idea to start your day with warm water and lemon juice as it will pep up your metabolism. This will help you burn more calories, something very welcome for most women.

2. Warm water is also good to flush undesirable compounds from your body, and it improves the elasticity of your skin. If you have constipation, which is a very common ailment as our man-made foods lack fiber, warm water helps with having regular bowel movements. There is hardly anything worse than feeling clogged and bloated.

3. The drinking of too cold or too hot fluids is not advised in Chinese Medicine. It all has to do with keeping the right balance of your body’s yin and yang. When there is an imbalance, you will get unpleasant symptoms, like depression, brain fog, bloating, sleeping badly, and more. When you think about it, these are things you often hear about. These symptoms can be easily avoided by eating clean food and having a healthy lifestyle in general.

Let’s have a look at why a hot bath might be good

Saunas and hot baths are healthy as many studies have shown. It helps circulation and vascular function. Having a nice hot bath in the evening will help you fall asleep quickly. A hot bath can also function as a treat. You had a hard week and now you want to pamper yourself. Some candles, nice bubbles, and perhaps a pleasant drink. Do not forget that taking a bath together saves water.

Do not miss watching this short but “cold” video. Quite amazing how this man got his health back. If you are interested in the Wim Hof Method, you can read about it here.

Conclusion

Drinking freezing water is definitely not beneficial, and on the other side drinking warm water is.

Taking cold showers or even sitting in an ice bath has positives, and warm baths can also help. There are pros and cons you should be informed about so you will remain happy and healthy.

Water is of utmost importance in our lives, but do you know what water you are drinking? Being up to date on regulations in your place is not a bad idea. Your water might have undesirable additives and one of them is fluoride. Have a look at this post.

As simple as all of these arguments might appear to be, it is not totally like that when it has to be followed. I have been a constant follower of a diet plan but living with cold water has been the only but, because I crave it almost every time.

Thanks  that you have pointed out the reasons I need warm water instead of cold, though the reasons are convincing but then, it would be a gradual process for me.

    Good Morning Rodger,

I understand it might sound awful to say you cannot have your ice-cold drink anymore. One should though realize it is not so healthy. Not everybody will suffer any consequences but it could happen in the long term.

Did you look at the video of the man sitting in the bath with ice? He was of course in a desperate situation and would have tried anything to become healthy again. The seriousness of your situation will determine the amount of sacrifice you are willing to make.

Thank you for your visit and comment.

I must say that this is a very good post because I didn’t know before that ice-cold water has so many negatives. I always liked having ice in my drinks and in the foods that I eat. I think I have a thing to change what type of water I drink. I like the way you have explained everything here and I will make sure I have more warm baths as well. Thank you for educating me

    Good Morning Henderson,

Thank you for your visit and your comment. Nice to see you again.

Our body is an extremely complex and fine-tuned unit. What we sometimes do to our bodies we for sure would not do to our car. It is always good to be informed about things. The final decision is up to us.

Unimaginable to see that warm water has all these benefits and I see no reason why I have been living all my life on only cold water. This is really great since winter is almost here and the weather is changing. This could be the perfect time to engage in the use of warm water.

At least, if I could master the use over the fall where there is a necessity for it, then, I should be able to achieve with it.more.

I must admit that I have learned something here reading your post, I love drinking ice- cold drinks in the summer when it’s hot, I have also been told that drinking ice cold water burns calories so is therefore helpful for anyone dieting or trying to lose weight.  I never knew ice-cold water was bad for our health.

I’m not even sure if I could get into an ice-cold bath and I never knew that would be beneficial either. I have however had a cold shower before but that was on a very hot day, but from now on I’ll be drinking less cold drinks and taking more cold showers, thank you for this info.

    Good evening Russ,

Thank you for your comment. Nice to see you again.

Sorry to have come with this news. I know there are many people who like to drink ice-cold drinks, my better half included. I told him it is not good for him but he does not listen. I wonder why?

Anyhow, it is good to be informed about things, you are free to do as you like.

Since water is very important to human existence, it should be given the utmost attention. It’s true that drinking ice cold water can cause a couple of dangers to human health, I wasn’t so enlightened to this extent, thanks to your article.

I know It requires a lot of energy to bring back the body to its normal temperature when you drink ice- cold water. Sometimes, I get sore throat whenever I take ice-cold water but I thought it was something normal to happen, I now know it’s bad. I’ve been blessed in knowledge by this article, thanks for sharing it.

Nice to hear you found my article helpful. Water is so important and with time it will get even more important as there will be less of it. Spain is drying out as many other places in the world.

Oh my, I have been taking in cold water for a while and didn’t know it is detrimental to my health. Actually, I do not only take cold water, I also take cold drinks and other liquids. Reading through this, I see that I might have been taking everything all contaminated in the past. I would need to do something about that and stop so I can live a healthy life. About bathing, I have never been a fan of cold baths, I see it also has some advantages. Thanks for this.

    Good evening John,

Sorry, this has upset you but it is better to be informed about these things. You then choose what you are going to do. There were times when contaminated ice cubes were quite an issue. People could get really ill and especially being on a holiday that was not funny. Nowadays, in most countries, this problem has been solved but one still should take care.

    Thank you for your comment.

Thank you a lot for this great information.

For sure I didn’t really know that cold water can be as dangerous as you said, but some times it’s too hot and cold water could be the only option. for bathing, cold water is better most especially here in Africa where the weather is always at our side.

Is it bad to substitute warm water for a cup of coffee?

I live in Spain and here the weather is also really nice so having cold showers is not a problem. I know a cold drink can be very nice at times but I normally only take one ice-cube.

Linda Frankson

Hi, there I am so delighted that you looked into the ice-man he is an extraordinary human being. I have followed his work because I have had issues with breathing and have been looking into the reasons.

Mostly it is oxygen deficiency that we all have. What I found in the Wim Hoff method is that we are adding oxygen to our system.

That is why I like the hydrogen peroxide to much; it floods the body with Oxigen.
The Wim Hoff method has mostly to do with his breathing after breathing so deep then we hold the breath it is returning us to our normal alkaline Ph, and this is what his healing is all about — bringing the body back to this state of being.

My brother, as you know, is an acupuncturist, and when there have been strep throat would put you on ice . not drinking but holding in the mouth.
And more often then not, this helped to calm the throat, and then you are better able to the swallow.

The most recent news with Wim is that there is a Nobel price given from the scientist that are studying the method and has proven that reasons why it works.

As for myself, I have used his breathing method to improve my oxygen levels+ Hydrogen peroxide in my water to improve the oxygen levels in our drinking water.

There is so much that we still don’t know.
For example, dead water, filtered water, can kill your water, but oxygen peroxide can bring it alive again by adding oxygen back into your water again. Oh My, I have written too much again.(O:

    Good Morning Linda,

Welcome back to my website. Thank you for leaving a comment. You are a faithful visitor, thank you.

Michael and I did the protocol and now continue drinking the water with hydrogen peroxide every day.
Cancer feels very unhappy and will not be able to spread in an environment with a lot of oxygen. That is one of the important reasons why one should follow this protocol.

I must admit I have never sat in a bathtub with ice and neither do I jump into ice-cold water. For 7 to 8 months of the year, I do shower cold and that does help too. At least my immune system is strong and the last time I was sick in bed was at the end of 2000.

I am blessed to live surrounded by nature so the quality air is good here. One of the basic things you need to remain healthy.

Thanks for the visit Linda, hasta pronto.

Hey Taetske, thanks for the interesting facts about cold/warm water. I have an uncle who is into Chinese medicine and he always told me that drinking cold water wasn’t a good choice. I never understood why but recently I’ve started to notice a little bloating when drinking it, so I’ve switched to warm water instead.

Still, I believe that cold water is superior to warm when it comes to injury treatment and recovery from exercise. It is also better for boosting up your energy in the morning 🙂 So both are good in their own ways.

Thanks again for the article!

Thanks for this appreciable enlightenment! I’ve developed the habit of constantly drinking iced-cold water whenever I felt like drinking water to satisfy my thirst, though I was told about the side effects. I want to believe now that I’m set free today after reading your post.

It caught me deep down inside and straightened me on what type of water I should be drinking. Henceforth, I’ll stop icing water and rather choose to drink water in its warm state. Thanks for putting me in the right order!

    Good afternoon Joyce,

It is nice to hear that you have benefitted from the information in my post. I think it is a good idea to stop drinking ice-cold water. My better half insists on doing it, but you know men do not listen most of the time.

Try the lemon juice with warm water on an empty stomach in the morning. That is said to be very healthy.

Thank you for your comment on my website. I hope you downloaded your free PDF? Tulip widget.
